There are three ways to use your Bluetooth low energy (BLE) devices with Zwift.
The first option uses the free Zwift Companion app (ZC) for Android and iOS mobile devices to send BLE signals to Zwift on your PC/Mac. The second option is for Mac users only, and allows for native BLE support. The third option involves using the Zwift on iOS.
We'll cover the ZC option first.
Zwift Companion app (ZC) - PC/Mac
In this configuration, the app acts as a bridge, translating BLE signals so the Zwift game can understand them.
To enable BLE support, grab the latest version of Zwift Companion app for iOS (version 1.4 or greater) from the App Store, or for Android (version 1.5 or greater) from Google Play. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your device, and do not pair your trainer directly to your device.
iOS Only: Open the Zwift Companion app on your iPhone. In the iOS app, tap the menu button, then SETTINGS -> DEVICE CONNECTION. Enable Device Connection. You’ll only have to do this once.
This screen is NOT ON THE ANDROID VERSION. It happens automatically on the Android app.
Launch Zwift on your computer, and log-in.
On the PAIRED DEVICES screen, note the BLE-smartphone icon in the upper-left corner of this screen. It should indicate that the game is connected to the app by emitting circles (if it's not, see our troubleshooting article).
Now you can click Search on a device category to search for both ANT+ and BLE devices. Select your devices, click OK, and you’re ready to ride!
Click RIDE or pick a workout in TRAINING, select your course with CHANGE, and Ride On!
Native BLE - (Mac)
For native Mac BLE, click the gear in the top-right corner of the pairing screen. If your computer supports Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth Low Energy or BLE), you'll have the option to choose between using the Zwift Companion app and Built-in Bluetooth.
Not sure if your computer supports native BLE?
- The Mac Mini and MacBook Air both received Bluetooth 4.0 support in 2011.
- The MacBook Pro and iMac added it in 2012.
- The Mac Pro received support in December 2013.
Choose Built-in Bluetooth:
You should see the Bluetooth icon the top-left corner of the screen change from a mobile phone to a Bluetooth icon.
You should now be able to pair with your devices by searching under the corresponding Power or Speed + Classic Trainer menu.
Native BLE - (iOS)
If you're using the iOS version of Zwift, you will also be able to pair via the native BLE in your phone. As you start Zwift, you'll be prompted with a notification to turn on your Bluetooth setting if it's not already on.
After you've turned on your Bluetooth setting, you'll be able to pair by looking under the corresponding Power or Speed + Classic Trainer menu for your trainer/sensors.
- Make sure your mobile device battery level is at least 50% if you’re planning on riding for longer than an hour.
- You can lock your device's screen, or send the app to the background while BLE devices are connected, and the app will continue to work.
- Mount your device on or near your handlebars for best reception between your BLE peripherals and your iPhone.
- FYI: Most Garmin sensors do not support Bluetooth, only ANT+
- If you have an ANT+ receiver, you can even mix and match BLE and ANT+ peripherals. For example, a BLE-only heart-rate monitor can be used alongside an ANT+-only smart trainer.
- None of these options work with a separate Bluetooth dongle/receiver. You need to either use ZC or built-in BLE on supported devices.
