# Virtual Shifting FAQ

What is virtual shifting?

Virtual shifting replaces your bike’s physical gears and lets you change gears electronically while riding in Zwift. It's also supported in ROUVY with compatible Zwift hardware.

How does virtual shifting work?

Virtual shifting changes trainer resistance electronically to match your selected virtual gear. Gear changes are controlled through Zwift Ride, Zwift Click or Zwift Play, so your chain doesn’t move when shifting.

What are the benefits of virtual shifting?

Virtual shifting provides smooth, quiet gear changes without moving the chain. Shifts are consistent regardless of your cadence or power, and you can change gears while stationary.

What equipment do I need to use virtual shifting?

To use virtual shifting, you need a Zwift Ready trainer or a Zwift Cog Compatible trainer. For Zwift Cog Compatible trainers, you'll also need a Zwift Cog and Click Upgrade Kit, Zwift Play, or a Zwift Ride Smart Frame.

Some compatible smart bikes, such as the Wahoo KICKR BIKE, support electronic shifting, but this isn't integrated with Zwift virtual shifting and virtual gears won't appear in the in-game HUD.

How do I access virtual shifting?

Virtual shifting requires the latest version of Zwift, the latest firmware for your trainer and any compatible controllers, a supported connection method for your trainer, and a connected Zwift Ride, Zwift Click, or Zwift Play.

Which connection methods support virtual shifting?

Supported connection methods vary by trainer and may include Bluetooth, Zwift Companion Bridge, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB. ANT+ doesn't support virtual shifting.

How many virtual gears does Zwift offer?

Virtual shifting includes 24 virtual gears.

Why does virtual shifting use 24 gears?

It’s designed to balance gear range and spacing for a consistent riding experience.

How do I know which virtual gear I'm in?

Your current virtual gear is displayed in the in-game HUD while riding.

Where can I use virtual shifting?

You can use virtual shifting throughout Zwift. Virtual shifting is also supported in ROUVY with compatible Zwift hardware. For infon about using virtual shifting in ROUVY, see [ROUVY Support](https://support.rouvy.com/hc/en-us).

Can I use virtual shifting in a workout?

Yes, but only during free ride segments. In ERG mode, Zwift automatically controls resistance to match the workout targets.

Can I control when I use virtual shifting?

Yes. You can enable or disable virtual shifting in the Zwift in-game settings.

Do I need to pay extra to use virtual shifting?

No. Virtual shifting is included with your Zwift membership.

Can I use virtual shifting in ROUVY?

Yes. Virtual shifting is supported in ROUVY with compatible Zwift hardware. For setup, supported features, and troubleshooting, see [ROUVY Support](https://support.rouvy.com/hc/en-us).
