# Removing the Rear Wheel from Your Bike

If you need to measure your dropouts, or mount your bike on the Zwift Hub, the first step is to remove the rear wheel from your bike:

1. Shift your bike's gears so the chain is on the largest chain ring on the front and the smallest cog at the back.

2. If you have rim brakes, open the rear brake.

3. Determine if your bike has a quick release or thru axle.

    * **Quick Release:** A quick release skewer is a hinged mechanism with springs, it's thinner than a thru axle.

    * **Thru Axle:** A thru axle is one piece, it has no moving parts and is thicker than a quick release skewer.

4. If your bike has a quick release, open the lever.

5. If your bike has a thru axle, use the handle on the thru axle (or an Allen key) to unscrew the thru axle then remove it from the frame.

6. Pull the derailleur away from the bike at the same time as you pull the rear wheel away from the bike.
