# Compatible Cycling Hardware

Cycling hardware provides the data Zwift uses to calculate your in-game movement. This article explains the hardware features that work best with Zwift and describes the different types of compatible cycling hardware.

If you're new to Zwift, see [What You Need to Ride](https://support.zwift.com/en_us/what-you-need-to-ride-HJh4YQbxr).

## Recommended Hardware Features

The following hardware features provide the best Zwift experience.

Feature

How it Works in Zwift

Transmits Power Data over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)

Power data tells Zwift how much power (watts) you're producing.

Controls Resistance

Simulates terrain changes in SIM mode and automatically adjusts resistance during workouts in ERG mode.

Transmits Cadence

Provides cadence data so Zwift can track how quickly you're pedaling.

Zwift Ready or Zwift Cog Compatible

Supports Zwift features and controls, including virtual shifting.

Zwift Ready and Zwift Cog Compatible trainers work with Zwift products including Zwift Cog, Zwift Click, Zwift Play, and Zwift Ride Smart Frame.

Hardware that doesn't support all of these features may still work with Zwift, but some features may be unavailable and additional sensors may be required depending on the hardware.

### Virtual Shifting Requirement

Virtual shifting is supported only when your trainer is connected through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. ANT+ connections don't support virtual shifting.

## Direct Drive Trainers

Direct drive trainers generally provide the best Zwift experience because most transmit power data and automatically control resistance.

With a direct drive trainer, you remove the rear wheel from your bike and mount the bike directly to the trainer.

Examples of manufacturers that make direct drive trainers include: Cyclotronics, Decathlon, Elite, JetBlack, Saris, Tacx, Technogym, Wahoo, Xplova, Zwift

Not every model from these manufacturers is compatible with Zwift. Check your specific model before purchasing.

## Wheel-on Trainers

Wheel-on trainers can be a good entry-level option. Some models transmit power data and control resistance, while others require additional sensors.

If your trainer doesn't transmit power, speed, or cadence data, you may need a compatible power meter or speed and cadence sensor.

With a wheel-on trainer, the rear wheel remains attached to the bike and is mounted onto the trainer.

Examples of manufacturers that make wheel-on trainers include: 1Up USA, Ascent, Blackburn, B'Twin, Cascade, Elite, Giant, Growtac, JetBlack, Kinetic, LeMond, Lifeline, MINOURA, Nashbar, RacerMate, Saris, STAC, Tacx, Travel Trac, Wahoo, ZYCLE

Not every model from these manufacturers is compatible with Zwift. Check your specific model before purchasing.

## Rollers

Rollers can be used with Zwift when paired with a power meter.

Some smart rollers transmit power data and may also control resistance.

Examples of manufacturers that make rollers that are compatible with Zwift include: Elite, Oreka, Wahoo

Not every model from these manufacturers is compatible with Zwift. Check your specific model before purchasing.

## Indoor Bikes

Indoor bikes vary in functionality. Some transmit power data directly, while others require a power meter.

Examples of manufacturers that make indoor bikes that are compatible with Zwift include: Body Bike, Concept2, Horizon, Keiser, Life Fitness, Matrix, MYOLYN, RealRyder, Saris, Schwinn, Stages, STAR TRAC, Tacx, Wahoo, Wattbike, ZYCLE

Not every model from these manufacturers is compatible with Zwift. Check your specific model before purchasing.
